Accra’s Electric Buses: First Ride Experience, Routes, Fares & Tap and Go 2026

I Took Accra’s Electric Bus — No Noise, No Conductor Shouting
6:30am at Kaneshie. No trotro mate shouting “Adentan Adentan”. Just quiet blue bus with “Tap and Go” on side.
I tapped Ghana Card. Reader said “Akwaaba Richmond”. Fare GH₵4.50 deducted. I sat. USB port charging my Infinix. No diesel smoke. No heat from engine.
This is Accra’s new electric bus — 2026.
Here is everything: routes, fare, how Tap and Go works, and if it’s better than trotro.

What Are Accra’s Electric Buses?
100 electric buses deployed by Metro Mass + SmartTransyt + GPRTU partnership under 24H+ transport and Big Push infrastructure.
Made for Accra’s BRT lite — dedicated lane coming on Nsawam Road.
Features:
- 100% electric, 250km range, charge at night at Achimota depot
- 45 seats + 20 standing
- Tap and Go card reader (Ghana Card or Tap and Go card)
- Free USB charging ports
- CCTV + GPS tracking
- No conductor needed — driver only
- AC working (yes, in Ghana bus AC works)
Goal: Reduce trotro cost and emissions. Trotro fare Kaneshie to Adentan is GH₵8. Electric bus GH₵4.50 — 43% cheaper.

Fare & How Tap and Go Works
Fare:
- Kaneshie to Adentan: GH₵4.50
- Kaneshie to Madina: GH₵3.50
- Full route Kaneshie-Ashaiman: GH₵6.00
- Student with Ghana Card: 30% discount = GH₵3.15 for Kaneshie-Adentan
Trotro same route: GH₵8-10. So you save GH₵3.50 per trip. Monthly save GH₵210 if daily commuter.
How to pay:
You have 3 options:
Ghana Card Tap: If your Ghana Card is linked to Tap and Go wallet (dial *928# to link), just tap card on reader. Fare deducted from MoMo.
Tap and Go Card: Buy card at Circle station for GH₵20 (with GH₵10 credit). Top up via MoMo *928#.
Tap and Go App QR: Open app, show QR, driver scans.
No cash. No “mate give me change”. If your balance low, reader says “Top up please”.
My first tap: I tapped Ghana Card, it worked in 1 second. Receipt via SMS.
First Ride Experience: Kaneshie to Adentan (Review)
Time: 6:30am departure, arrived Adentan 7:15am = 45 mins. Trotro same time usually 1hr 15 mins due to stops.
Why faster:
- No conductor stopping for passengers to negotiate fare
- Limited stops — only designated bus stops
- Dedicated lane at some parts of Nsawam Road
Inside:
- Quiet. Electric motor no noise. You can hear phone call.
- Clean. No black smoke.
- USB charging — 2 ports per row. My phone 20% to 55% during ride.
- Seats more comfortable than Metro Mass old buses
- AC cold — some passengers said too cold (we are not used to AC in bus)
Driver: One driver, no mate. Speaks via mic: “Next stop Madina”.
Passengers: Mostly students, office workers, traders with small goods. Market women said “No more mate shouting at us”.
Downside:
- No space for big loads — if you carry big sack of gari, trotro better
- Last bus 10pm — if you close late at Makola, no bus
- If Tap and Go network down, bus waits — happened once at 37, 5 mins delay
- Only 3 routes now — many areas not covered
Electric Bus vs Trotro vs Metro Mass Old Bus
Winner for daily commuter: Electric bus — cheaper + faster + phone charging.
Winner for trader with big load: Trotro still.
How to Use as Ghanaian Student/Worker
If you are student Legon/UPSA:
Buy Tap and Go card at Madina station GH₵20. Load GH₵50 weekly. Use student discount — link Ghana Card + student ID via app.
If you are trader Kaneshie:
If you carry small bag, electric bus saves GH₵7 daily (GH₵210 monthly). Enough for one extra bag of goods.
If you have Ghana Card but not linked:
Dial *928# > Select Tap and Go > Link Ghana Card > Enter MoMo PIN. Takes 2 mins.
Challenges 2026
- Charging infrastructure: Only Achimota depot charges 100 buses. Need more depots or buses queue.
- Power: ECG dumsor affects charging — buses have 250km range, but if no light whole night, morning trips delayed.
- Roads: Potholes damage battery — Nsawam road still has potholes
- Awareness: Many still think need trotro only — no marketing at Kaneshie yet
Will It Succeed?
Ghana tried Metro Mass before — failed due to cash leakage (mates stealing). Tap and Go solves that — no cash, money goes directly to system.
GPRTU says drivers save fuel cost — electric charge GH₵80 per full charge vs diesel GH₵400 per day.
If government maintains dedicated lanes and keeps fare at GH₵4.50, it will work for Accra commuters.
Big test: Accra-Kumasi motorway e-tolling with Tap and Go — if that works, same system for buses nationwide.
Tips for First Ride
- Go early 5:30am-7am — less crowded, AC colder
- Charge phone — bring cable, not all ports work yet
- Tap in and tap out? No, only tap in for now. Flat fare per route.
- Download app “Tap and Go Ghana” to track bus
- Don’t carry big sack — driver may refuse
