By 2030, more than one in five people in the U.S. will be over age 65, and 60% of them will be managing multiple chronic conditions. Good health care has helped America grow older — but the coming years will present an increase in medical needs that call for new programs and technologies. What will this generation need from health care providers in the years to come?
What the numbers tell us
Life after 65 represents a new chapter for many. Today, 56 million people are 65+ — and another 65 million are between 50 and 64. Our latest video, inspired by the spring 2023 Health Trends Report, looks at “The future of healthy aging” and explores the vibrancy of baby boomers and how they are changing the health care industry. A significant number of older people want to “age in place” and stay close to home — even when they need care. “To serve older Americans means rethinking the tools we already have and innovating where new needs arise,” says Dr. Sree Chaguturu, Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, CVS Health. Neighborhood health destinations will be as important as virtual care and home health delivery.
Our key takeaway
In the next 40 years, more than 500,000 people will turn 100. There is much to celebrate about growing older despite the physical challenges. Seventy-five percent of older people say they have time to focus on what makes them happy, and a majority in their 70s and 80s report a higher quality of life.
